Egypt 4
On our way to Luxor we visit Kom Ombo and Edfu.
Kom Ombo temple is situated on
the banks of the Nile some 20 miles north of Aswan, and is unusual in
that it is dedicated to two gods, Horus & Sobek. Sobek was
the crocodile god of Nile fertility, and the bend of the river here was
once home to a large number of Nile crocodiles, which were held
to be sacred. Indeed, there is a small collection of mummified
crocodiles in the small chapel of Hathor within the temple.
For a more spiritual explanation of the temple and the crocodiles, read
here.

TEMPLE OF HORUS, EDFU
Of all the temples of ancient Egypt, the one at Edfu is the most complete and best preserved. The reason is that the temple had been totally submerged under the desert except for the very top of the pylon entrance. A small amount of stone had been removed from the exposed part, but when excavated it was found to be in near perfect condition.
