The last few weeks I have read a lot about the methods to load my sites quicker.
This will be a technical story, so those that don’t like that can skip this. 😀
Since I have 4 blogs made with WordPress, I started adding the W3 Total Cache Plugin. Installing that was no problem, but the settings are something else.
I am still trying to figure out what settings are the best.
Sometimes the minify settings are breaking my design. I learned that setting them to manual works the best.
I also learned that W3 Total Cache influences the Nextgen Gallery.
So if your galleries stop working properly it probably is one of the settings in the W3 Total Cache plugin.
Then I tried to find a good CDN provider to host my content and images.
I am still in the process of finding the right one.
I started with Rackspace, but for some reason they aren’t showing the images in my galleries. And since that is the main reason that I want to use a CDN I think I have to search for another CDN.
The weird part about Rackspace is, that they don’t support WordPress. You can create an account and get called by a representative that asks questions, but later on when I tried to get some support regarding the images issue, they just said they don’t support WordPress. I don’t think that is really friendly towards the client.
And that is the UK Rackspace support.
I understand why this is. Using the Cloud Files is really cheap and they probably only want to help customers that use their expensive servers.
But still I think that is weird.
The Dutch Rackspoace support was very helpful though. They explained to me that you can’t get the galleries from Nextgen to work with the Rackspace Cloud Files. Too bad.
Then I tried Amazon Cloudfront. And if you use the Origin Pull option from within the W3 Total Cache plugin, it is very easy to set up and cheap.
I have it working now for one of my blogs.
I am stil figuring out how to do this for my other 3 blogs, that are in subdirectories of a domain. I haven’t figured out how to get that to work with Amazon Cloudfront, if that is possible at all.
So I will be investigating a little further.
If somebody has some tips, please let me know.
