Hi everybody,
In 1977 there was a TV Series from the BBC, called Who pays the Ferryman?
The title of the series refers to the ancient religious belief and mythology of Charon the ferryman to Hades. In ancient times it was the custom to place coins in or on the mouth of the deceased before cremation so that the deceased could pay the ferryman to go to Hades.
The eight-part series was written by Michael J. Bird.
I am a great fan of this series.
Cast:
Jack Hedley – Alan Haldane
Betty Arvaniti – Annika Zeferis
Takis Emmanuel – Matheos Noukakis
Patience Collier – Katerina Matakis
Neil McCarthy – Babis Spiridakis
Mairi Sokali – Elena Vassilakis
Nikos Verlekis – Nikos Vassilakis
Stefan Gryff – The Major
Alan Haldane returns to Crete where he fought in the second world war. Only to find out that his former girlfriend died, but had a daughter. He decides to stay.
The series is for a large part filmed on the island Crete in Greece. The Taverna and Alan Haldane’s house are in Elounda. In 2006 I visited Elounda and went to see some of the places of the series.
For some reason I really was moved to see those places. Here are some photos of it.
And here is a little video from the series.
